She married after her young brother died in an accident. Her husband was caught copying in the exams and suspended. He made it impossible for her to study, quarreling whenever she opened her books. One morning as we sat in her house discussing the death of babies to Marasmus and Kwashiorkar , her husband barged in and threw the wedding ring … I did not understand the foreign language in which he spoke. After he left , she put on a fresh coat of lipstick , powdered her face. “He has no place to stay nor money” she murmured. “You remember that poem you recited some time ago?” I looked blank.
“lust ends is then love begins? I had laughed at you , saying love will never begin for me….And you thought my flesh was happy”….and then she sobbed in my arms for a long time.

  1. So much is said here — So much truth.

Life teaches us tough lessons. How to love again after losing a love is perhaps one of the toughest lessons we must learn.

  2. stress! i love the composite analogy of love and stress this piece presents. love doesn’t kill, it’s the foolish things we do (or don’t do) in the name of love that kill us. the same is true of stress, and like Hans Selye says, “Its not stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it.” go get your man, woman and teach him stress should bind not unwind. nice piece.

    1. Thank you for your optimism. The wish to dominate versus the wish to affiliate are such contradictory wishes with in human beings. She could have taken his failure any number of times , but she could not take the humiliation of him cheating in the exams. Her moral superiority rather than the intelligence , irked him , aggression could not set the scales right……All happy families are alike , every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way , said Tolstoy…….this was one such anecdote…..
